Alfred is a town and village in Allegany County, New York. The village is within the town. Alfred is named after the 9th century Anglo-Saxon King, Alfred the Great. The village is home to Alfred University and Alfred State College. The village consists mostly of people who attend or are affiliated with the two colleges. As of August of 2021, the town population was 5,207, with a majority (4,073) living in the village.
Traffic stops in the town and village of Alfred can be conducted by New York State Police or Allegany County Sheriff’s Department. In addition, there is also a village police department that conducts traffic patrol on the village roads. There are technically two courts in Alfred: the Alfred Town Court and the Alfred Village Court. They share a courtroom and court personnel. Each court handles the same type of cases, such as traffic violations, misdemeanors, and small claims.
