Portage, New York
Portage is a small and rural town in Livingston County, New York. As of July of 2022, its population was just 840. The town is considered part of the Finger Lakes region and covers twenty-six and two thirds of a square mile. Inside the town are several hamlets. They are named Dalton, Hunt, Hunt Hollow, Oakland and Portage. The town was settled around the early 1800’s and formed in 1827. Its early economy grew exponentially due to the extension of the Erie Railroad. The town was once home to the longest and tallest wooden bridge in the world. In 1875 the bridge was destroyed in a fire. It was remade and saw usage until 2017.
