Alabama is the name of a town in Genesee County, New York. It is located approximately forty miles northeast of the City of Buffalo. The town encompasses the hamlets of Alabama Center, Basom, Indian Falls, Meadeville, South Alabama, and Wheatville. , the population of Alabama was estimated at 1,700. The town covers 42.8 square miles, most of it being farmland. First established in 1826, the town was originally called “Gerrysville” until it changed its name to Alabama in 1828. In the southern part of town, County Route 26 (Ledge Road) serves the remaining communities. Route 26 stretches east-west. The town’s south-west corner is separated by the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. A small portion of land to the west of the reservation falls under Alabama’s jurisdiction.
